Renewable Energy Site Assessments

If you have ever wondered if a Solar-Electric or Wind Turbine installation, or some combination (hybrid) of these technologies makes sense for your home or business, a SITE ASSESSMENT is an invaluable aid in helping you decide.  Marc Edward LLC currently offers Solar-Electric & Wind Power Site Assessments.  Please continue reading to learn more, or call 610-349-3614, or inquire via e-mail.

Solar-Electric Site Assessment

(AKA: Photovoltaic or PV Site Assessment)

What the assessment will tell you:

1.   How much electricity you can generate from the Sun at one or more sites on your property.

2.   How much electricity you can expect for each month of the year.

3.   The approximate installed cost of the solar-electric system.

4.   An estimate of how long will it take to “pay-off” the solar-electric system through reduced electric bills.

5.   How much pollution a solar-electric system at your site will prevent.

6.   Examples of what a solar-electric array would look like at your location.

7.   A list of federal & state rebates available for your location.

8.   Whether you can significantly improve your site’s solar-electric potential by removing certain trees or other obstructions.

9.   If you wish, referrals to qualified solar-electric installers.

Does a solar-electric site assessment make sense for you?

1.   Do you have a south facing roof, or a flat roof, that is in unobstructed sunlight for at least eight hours a day?  Or, do you have a minimum 15’ X 15’ cleared area on your lot that is in direct, unobstructed sunlight for at least eight hours a day?

2.   Are you willing and able to pay at least the following amount for a professionally installed system?  Cost figures include an estimated $4/watt New York State government rebate:

System Size

Typ. % of small home electrical use covered*

Minimum Installed Cost

1,000 watt

10 – 15 %

$6,000

3,000 watt

30 – 45 %

$13,500

6,000 watt

60 – 90 %

$22,500

10,000 watt

100+ %

$35,000

* Does not apply to electrically heated homes.

If you can say “yes” to these questions, then you are a good candidate for a solar-electric system and an excellent candidate for a solar-electric site assessment.

What a solar-electric site assessment involves:

1.   After a brief, no-charge phone consultation, Marc Edward will schedule a time to meet with you at your site.

2.   While at your site, the Marc Edward assessor will discuss with you your best potential site or sites.

3.   The assessor will then take solar impingement measurements using a Solar Pathfinder instrument.  This measurement can be performed equally well at any time of year and in any weather conditions.

4.   The assessor will return to the Marc Edward office generate your comprehensive site assessment report.

5.   Reports are generally mailed, or e-mailed, to the client within 24 hours once payment has been received.

Sample Assessments, Guides, Etc:

(Requires Free Adobe Acrobat Viewer.)

(Note: Each of these reports are two pages in length.)

1.   12 kW fixed array ground mount system in Central PA.

2.   12 kW two-axis tracked system in Central PA. (variation of above site assessment)

3.   6 kW roof mount system in Central PA.

4.   3 kW two-axis tracked system in Eastern PA.

5.   Site Assessment Report Key (Explains how to read an Assessment Report)

6.   What you will need to provide to have a site assessment done at your location

Cost of a Solar-Electric Site Assessment:

-          Base Cost:  $250.00

This includes assessment reports for up to two different sites at the same address, and up to two system variations per site, for a total of up to four assessment reports.  (A $30.00 non-refundable deposit is required to schedule an on-site assessment.)

-          Additional site assessments performed at the same address during the same visit are charged at $30 each.

-          Additional system variations for any given site will be charged at $10 per variation.

-          An additional $1.25 per mile will be charged for clients further than 25 miles from Oswego, NY.

-          Payment may be made by check, credit card, or cash.

Wind Power Site Assessment

What the assessment will tell you:

1.   How much electricity you can generate from the wind at a site on your property for a variety of wind turbine models and tower heights.

2.   How much electricity you can expect for each month of the year.

3.   The approximate installed cost of the wind power system.

4.   An estimate of how long will it take to “pay-off” the wind power system through reduced electric bills.

5.   How much pollution a wind power system at your site will prevent.

6.   Examples of what a wind turbine would look like at your location.

7.   A list of federal & state rebates available for your location.

8.   Whether you can significantly improve your site’s wind power potential by removing certain trees or other obstructions.

9.   If you wish, referrals to qualified wind power system installers.

Does a wind power site assessment make sense for you?

1.   Do you have an acre or more of land that is largely unobstructed by buildings and trees for at least 75 feet in all directions?  (Larger systems will require more space.)

2.   Do you feel that your location is fairly windy for at least six months a year?

3.   Are you willing and able to pay at least the following amount for a professionally installed system?  Cost figures include an estimated 35-50% New York State government rebate:

If you can say “yes” to these questions, then you are a good candidate for a wind power system and an excellent candidate for a wind power site assessment.

What a wind-power site assessment involves:

1.   After a brief, no-charge phone consultation, Marc Edward will schedule a time to meet with you at your site.

2.   While at your site, the Marc Edward assessor will discuss with you your best potential site.

3.   The assessor will then set up a wind speed data-logger at your site on a portable tower ranging from six to thirty feet in height depending on your site characteristics.  This can be performed equally well at any time of year.

4.   Wind speed data at your site will be automatically recorded for approximately 2-3 weeks.  In most cases, this is all the data we need to extrapolate a full years worth of wind speed data at your site.  Marc Edward LLC has developed algorithms that, when used with NCDC* climatological data, allow us to accurately estimate a annual wind speed profile at multiple elevations (tower heights) at your site.  (In a few cases, actual wind speed data at your site would have to be recorded for considerably longer, or on a tower higher than thirty feet, which would cost extra, but we would make you aware of this after the phone consultation and before you actually hired us.)

5.   After 2-3 weeks the assessor will return to your site to remove the wind speed data-logging equipment.

6.   The assessor will return to the Marc Edward office and generate your comprehensive site assessment report.

7.   Reports are generally mailed, or e-mailed, to the client within 24 hours once payment has been received.

Hybrid (Solar + Wind) Site Assessment

In most parts of the country, especially in the northern states, the windiest months coincide with the winter months when available solar energy (sunshine) is at a minimum.  In these cases, a combination solar/wind system (hybrid system) will provide the highest, most consistent energy yield from month to month throughout the year, allowing you to depend even less on grid electricity, or sell more electricity back to the grid.  Marc Edward can provide a Hybrid Site Assessment Report, which includes all the information found in both the solar-electric and wind power site assessment reports, for a combined base price of $700.00.  (An additional $2.00 per mile will be charged for clients further than 25 miles from Oswego, NY.)
